🌳 The Anatomy of Teak

Grade-A, B & C Insights

Not All Teak Is Created Equal

For centuries, teak (Tectona grandis) has stood as a global symbol of strength, refinement, and timeless craftsmanship.

But not all teak is created equal.

At the heart of every mature teak tree lies its most treasured core—Grade-A teak—harvested from the innermost 35% of the trunk, known as the heartwood. More than just timber, it remains biologically active even after harvest—quietly alive at the molecular level.

Within its grains live six essential compounds: natural oils, resins, lignin, silica, polyphenols, and tectoquinone.

Together, they form a living micro-ecosystem—a delicate dance of molecules that protect, adapt, and evolve. This natural synergy offers built-in resistance to sun, salt, rain, pests—even fire—ensuring longevity with a lifespan of over 75 years outdoors, the longest in its category.

Free of toxins and rich in subtle energetic balance, teak doesn’t just adorn your space—it breathes life into it, harmonizing effortlessly with your body, mind, and environment.

Today, Grade-A teak remains the gold standard for heirloom-quality furniture. It also serves the world’s most demanding luxury environments—from yacht decks and private jet interiors to high-end architectural design.

The Other Side of the Tree

Move outward from the core, and the story changes.

Grade-B and Grade-C teak, while still Tectona grandis, are sourced from the outer heartwood and sapwood—the younger, less developed parts of the tree. Though similar in appearance to the untrained eye, they lack the dense grain, silica content, and natural oil saturation found in true heartwood teak.

As a result, they are more vulnerable to cracking, warping, and fading—especially when exposed to moisture or shifting climates. These grades are commonly used in budget furniture and general construction where longevity isn’t a priority.

While they may offer short-term savings, they fall short in performance, durability, and prestige.

🔍 A Word on Authenticity

True Grade-A teak is rare, highly sought after, and frequently imitated. Its premium status has led many sellers to misuse the term “teak”—omitting the grade (A, B, or C), or worse, labeling entirely different species (such as Philippine teak or Brazilian teak) as if they were equal.

If the grade isn’t clearly stated—ask, or walk away.

Only Grade-A teak offers the full promise of natural weather resistance, structural integrity, and enduring beauty.

Lesser grades may cost less, but over time, they fade, crack, and disappoint.

Protect your investment. Choose Grade-A Teak—crafted to last for generations.
